Spruce Up Your Outdoor Space: Top 5 Design Tips for 2021

What I find SO satisfying about this time of year, is knowing that ALL of the good weather is in front of us. In my mind I’m already relaxing on the front porch and enjoying fire pits in my backyard. Many of us are. So this month I'm sharing my top 5 design tips for your outdoor space to make it look chic, inviting and fun.

These ideas will work for any design style and this is what I share with my Fairfield and Westchester clients and now my E-Design clients all around the country. Let's get started to spruce up your outdoor space to make it the sanctuary you deserve.

1
Add Texture

Texture adds dimension and interest to a space in a subtle and sophisticated way. Add texture easily with new pillows and throws but don’t stop there. Think about texture on furniture, shades, accessories, and even lighting.

Rattan & Wicker Everywhere

Once considered more of a beachy choice, today’s outdoor wicker and rattan furniture comes in a multitude of design styles and is a great way to add texture. Some of the chairs and furniture I’m recommending are sophisticated and so beautiful that they are conversation pieces. Many of them are resin materials so they are easily placed outdoors.

Not looking for new furniture? Think about adding this modern earthy vibe by switching out lighting and accessories.

3
Performance Fabric Only

When I design outdoor seating areas, they must be carefree and easy and that means using only performance fabrics on mold resistant cushions. Sunbrella comes in an array of colors and patterns that won’t fade. It wicks away dirt and is beyond easy to clean so you can keep it looking fresh.

Don’t forget an outdoor rug to ground your space. If you want a rug that is especially high performance, try one made of PVC. There are some fun options and they also work indoors.

Botanicals All Around

Surround yourself with botanicals by bringing greenery into your living space. This creates a feeling that you are not just observing the landscape but that you are actually a part of it.

Don’t worry about areas that don’t get enough light. There are many faux options that look real and will bring you a lot of joy. Add them to your front porch and patio freely. There also many shade options in real plantings that are beautiful and easy to care for.

Fire pits in all shapes & sizes

There’s nothing like sitting around a fire pit and it is a must if you want to extend the length of your outdoor living season. Today there are so many options so everyone can have some sort of fire. Choose from traditional wood burning to maintenance free ethanol, smoke free, portable and table top versions (that you can bring inside too). All are mesmerizing to look at and add ambience to your space. And do not forget the heaters! This helped prolong our outdoor spaces this year during the pandemic and now I would could not go with out one.

Speaking of ambience, add some string lights or some outdoor globe pendants to create a festive party vibe that you can enjoy every day. They are easy to put up and they are a good source of light too.
