Choosing Fabric for Your Furniture

What You Need To Know

When purchasing upholstered pieces for your home, it’s important to consider not only how it looks, but your needs and lifestyle. For instance, fabric suitable for a high-traffic area with kids and pets is very different from fabric you might use in a formal Living Room.

Today, there are so many options that you don’t need to give up style for function. However, choosing the most appropriate upholstery can be very confusing. So, here is a short guide to help you make an informed decision.

 Performance fabric

There are many types of performance fabrics that are durable and look great too! Essentially, performance fabric is one where the fibers are surrounded by a durable solution that resists stains and is easier to clean.

Therefore, when an accident does happen, clean-up is simple and effective. All you have to do is blot with a damp towel, a towel with mild soap and water, or a non-water solvent that you can purchase from a store.

Crypton

Crypton fabric is the gold standard for all performance fabrics.  It is not only stain and odor resistant, it is made without harmful chemicals, making it a family-friendly choice. When I am designing a room for a busy household, I always opt for crypton.  I also add a variety of colors and textures so it holds up well.

Leather

Leather is tried and true and is naturally durable and stain-resistant.  When scratches occur, most of the time you can rub them out. Leather is great looking and a classic that will elevate any room decor.

Linen

Linen is light, breathable, and hypoallergenic.  If you need a stain-resistant fabric, opt for performance linen. This will be family-friendly and have the same luxurious look and feel as natural linen.

Velvet

Velvet is always popular and will texture any style of the room. It is surprisingly durable, but if you want extra protection, there are performance velvets as well. In addition to adding texture and warmth to your space, velvet is luxurious, soft, and cuddle-worthy!
