Wild About Window Treatments

Window treatments provide privacy, protect against sun glare, save energy and provide a stylish finishing touch to a beautifully designed room. With numerous styles and an endless selection of fabrics, window treatments enhance any decor. While it can be costly, I do recommend custom-made because it pays off in a big way!

In some cases, however, foregoing the window treatment is wise. If you have an unobstructed and/or beautiful view, why not leave it exposed for you to enjoy? You can also opt-out when a room has the right architectural details such as a bank of french windows, specialty windows and those with wide detailed moldings. To go without and have your room look finished, the window should make some kind of statement. Otherwise, window treatments can be just the thing that bring all the elements of the room together!

Drapes are a classic choice that add a nice amount of softness to a room and work well in most spaces. There are countless fabric options and a million ways to hang them. Playing with length, texture (such as sheers, linens and cottons) and the weight of drapes is a fun way to add visual interest. Ready made drapes may look pretty but when hung most often they are not correctly sized for your space, they do not have any pleats to add the perfect drape of the fabric and they usually do not have lining. The result is never as they are pictured in a magazine. That photo for the ad takes hours to style and get just right. Clients always call and say how come my drapes do not look like those in the ad? After all who has the time or energy to have to fix and arrange drapes every time they are moved? That is why I recommend custom drapes.

Roman Shades are a practical and popular window covering. These are great for kids rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and any other windows where there are radiators below or adjacent walls too close for drapery hardware to be installed. They can add a more contemporary, clean and less fussy look to room. Roman shades lay flat when they are all the way down and form nice pleats when they are pulled up. They can be flat edge or soft edged. There are various style options for both finishing and trim and roman shades are also a great way to diffuse light.

Natural wood blinds are a current decor trend that bring nature indoors in a sophisticated way. Since they can be made from exotic reeds, woods and grasses, they come in a variety of natural colors and complex textures. These can come in blind form or as wooden roman shades also known as matchstick shades, natural shades or bamboo shades.

Layering can be sumptuous and also functional. This is accomplished by mixing different treatment styles and fabrics. Combining roman shades with drapes looks very pretty. Using different types of fabric can also act as insulation and soundproofing. All draperies and window treatments should be lined or backed in white fabric so when looking at the windows from the outside of the house it looks uniform.

Plantation shutters are common, particularly in casual coastal areas, because they are functional, with a simple, clean line. They are easy to maintain and provide privacy while also letting in light. These too can be combined with drapes for a softer look.

When one of my Fairfield or Westchester clients tells me that they that love to change their decor frequently, I recommend neutral color fabric. You can still play with textures (so it doesn't have to be boring) and it gives you greater flexibility. We can trim on the lead of the drape or on the bottom of the shade to add some fun and interest. This way you can bring whatever you want into the room, color and style wise, without having to change the windows too. Whatever your style or preference we can help you find the just right look and fabric to finish off your space to make it feel put together and stylized.

10+ years ago I added a full service work room to kellydesigns in order to ensure that my clients get a timely delivery of a highly personalized and a high quality product. This is an important thing to get right, because nothing makes a room look more polished and finished than a custom-tailored window treatment.
