The Ice Cube Trick for Removing Carpet Dents

Have you ever rearranged your furniture only to discover deep dents left behind in the carpet? Before covering them with another piece of furniture, head to the freezer!

Place an ice cube in each carpet indentation and allow it to melt completely. As the carpet slowly absorbs the water, the compressed fibers begin to swell and return to their original shape.

Once the ice has melted, blot away any excess moisture with a clean towel. Then gently lift the carpet fibers using the edge of a spoon, a coin or your fingers. Allow the area to dry thoroughly and finish by vacuuming over it.

A Few Helpful Tips

  • Use only one or two ice cubes per dent. The carpet should be damp, not soaked.
  • Place a towel underneath the area when treating a removable rug.
  • Test the method in an inconspicuous spot first, particularly on wool, silk, jute or other natural-fiber carpets.
  • For stubborn dents, repeat the process rather than using too much water at once.

This simple trick is especially helpful when rearranging a room, preparing for guests or staging a home for sale. It costs practically nothing—and your carpet may look as though the furniture was never there!
