Fall Decorating: Up Your Game

I'm sad to see summer end but excited to know that soon we will be immersed in the gorgeous colors of fall. Recently I started visualizing how I am going to do my own fall decorating as well as how I will decorate the homes of some of my clients.

So while I'm planning, I thought I'd share with you some of the Designer tips I use to make the homes of my Fairfield and Westchester clients look especially beautiful this season.

When it comes to fall decorating, Mums are always a good place to start. I think mums are the greatest of fall plants because they bring so much color into our lives. Think about it. You almost can't help but feel happy looking at mums. I love how this outdoor space was created -the colors , the layers, the movement are all so inviting and interesting!

Even better, Mums are effortless to decorate with. Not only are they good looking, they come in a variety of sizes and shades for any size outdoor space and personal preference.

Up your game by creating containers. It's easy!!! Use mums of more than one color. Then get creative with additional kinds of plants, placing them at different heights. Grasses, cat tails, or green and purple cabbage are options that will make your arrangement look like it was done by a professional.

Want to take it to the next level? Have some fun shopping for more fall goodies to expand your arrangement. Surround your mums or containers with pumpkins and gourds of different sizes, shapes and colors. Then add more mums and more arrangements. For a sophisticated look, create containers in baskets or pots of different sizes, heights and materials. Layering with different textures and heights keeps the arrangements more visually interesting.

Oktoberfest anyone? If you are having a party, hosting Thanksgiving (it's best to plan early) or just want to go all out, turn your walkway into a grand entry. Here I used tall corn husks wrapped in burlap and emphasized the door as a focal point by adding an autumnal wreath.

Invite fall into your home by bringing the outdoors in. Keep it on a smaller scale and apply the same techniques you used for your outdoor decor. I like to decorate the mantle because It's a nice long space where I can get really creative and it adds a lot of drama to the room.

Getting a little bit more delicate now, create flower vase arrangements with fall stems placing them on tables, servers, nightstands and wherever you want to add color. Autumn-colored roses, black eyed susans, sunflowers, orange Asiatic lilies, red and autumn-colored daisy poms are good options and work well together. Then finish it off with wheat, solidago and/or assorted greenery for a striking presentation.
