Transitioning Outdoors: Creating Spaces You’ll Truly Live In This Season
As the days grow longer here in Fairfield County, our homes naturally begin to expand beyond the walls. Patios, porches, and backyards become the places where morning coffee tastes better, dinners linger a little longer, and summer memories are made.
This time of year is always a reminder that outdoor spaces deserve the same thoughtful attention as the interiors we spend all winter creating. When designed well, they become a seamless extension of your home — comfortable, functional, and beautifully layered.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to elevate your outdoor spaces for the season ahead.
Creating “Outdoor Rooms”
The most inviting outdoor spaces feel intentional — almost like stepping into another room of the home rather than simply walking onto a deck or patio.
A few simple design elements can completely transform the feeling of the space:
- Anchor the area with a rug.
An all-weather rug instantly defines a seating area and brings warmth and comfort underfoot. It’s one of the easiest ways to make an outdoor space feel finished. - Add height and privacy.
Tall planters, layered greenery, trellises, or outdoor drapery help create softness and a sense of enclosure while adding beautiful visual interest. - Create distinct zones.
Even in smaller spaces, separating dining from lounging areas helps everything feel more functional and curated. Sometimes it’s as simple as changing the orientation of furniture.
Bringing Interior Style Outside
One of the biggest design shifts we continue to see in 2026 is the move toward softer, more refined outdoor living. Outdoor spaces are becoming less about matching patio sets and more about creating environments that feel collected, relaxed, and timeless.
I always encourage clients to think about:
- Natural materials that age beautifully.
Teak, stone, woven textures, and matte metal finishes create an elevated look that feels organic and enduring. - Layering texture.
Performance fabrics have come such a long way. Mixing soft linens, subtle patterns, and textured pillows keeps outdoor spaces feeling warm and inviting rather than flat or overly styled. - Thoughtful lighting.
Lighting changes everything outdoors. Lanterns, pathway lighting, candles, and softly lit trees create ambiance that makes people want to stay outside long after sunset.
A Few Summer Readiness Updates
Before the heat of summer fully arrives, now is the perfect time for a quick outdoor refresh.
- Power wash patios and hardscaping
- Refresh tired cushions or update toss pillows for a seasonal color change
- Add fragrant herbs like lavender or rosemary near seating areas
- Evaluate your shade throughout the day and consider updating umbrellas or awnings if needed
Sometimes the smallest updates make the biggest impact.
Designer Tip
Don’t just design for the experience of sitting outside — design for the view from inside your home too. Your outdoor spaces should feel just as beautiful looking out from the kitchen sink or family room as they do when you’re enjoying them outdoors.
