7 Trends That Date Your Home & What to Do About Them

Have you ever looked at old photos and laughed at your hairstyle and clothes? Try taking a look at your home from that point of view and you may find some things that feel outdated too.

If you find any aspects of your decor that are behind the times, no problem. Time and time again, I've seen a strategic design project bring sunshine into a tired space. My clients end up loving their homes even more. Not to mention that updating your home makes it more desirable to future potential Buyers.

So here are just 7 trends that date your home and what to do about them.

1
Heavy & Ornate Drapes

Drapes that are heavy, have ornamentation or multiple layers tend to overpower a room. For a more pleasing and current look, opt for something more understated.

In my workroom I'm creating simple panels that accentuate the decor, without feeling overly done. I love how these drapes complete this Dining Room. They are crisp and clean and eye catching too!

Traditional Kitchen Cabinetry In Brown

Traditional dark brown cherry or walnut cabinetry, especially with ornate molding and embellishments, has not been on trend for at least 10 years.

For a more current look, get classic or modern cabinetry or paint what you already have. Some contemporary colors are white, blue and gray. Here are the top 8 paint colors for kitchen cabinets. If you want brown cabinetry opt for a mid century or modern style with clean lines.

Bulky Cabinet Hardware

Kitchen cabinet hardware that is elaborate in design and shape unfortunately can make a whole room appear dated.

Opt for contemporary hardware instead, such as square knobs or bar pulls in the finish of your choice. Chrome, brushed nickel, and oil rubbed bronze are classics. Matte black and aged brass are trending and look great! You get a lot of bang for your buck when you switch out hardware to update your Kitchen.

Old Fireplace Facades

An older fireplace typically has a surround (often brick) with a large mantle.

In 2021 sleek and modern fireplaces are the norm in a wide range of materials to match any design style. When designing a fireplace here in Connecticut, you can use earthy materials for a warm and cozy look such as stone or bricks and a restored mantle made out of old barn wood. A simple easy fix for red brick is to paint it a high gloss white, black or gray to give it a modern feel.

Textured Ceilings

A popcorn ceiling is unattractive and outdated. Additionally, while the texture hides imperfections, it is nearly impossible to match when you need to make a repair or move a light fixture.

Smooth ceilings are more current and will not call attention to themselves. Take it to the next level and add custom woodwork or cover the ceilings with shiplap.

Small collectables and figurines (especially in large amounts) are a nuisance to clean and do make a home look dated. Multiple small items on shelves create visual clutter.

Trending in 2021 are shelfies that compliment your home decor. For a designer look, define a theme and color palette, choose artful objects and build it from there. Here's how to style the perfect shelfie.
